I don't have a spare serial port on my computer, can I still run WinCounter?

The current single user version of WinCounter can only be connected to a serial port. Here are some options:

  1. If you just want to try WinCounter, you can run it in manual trigger mode. In this special mode, an extra screen attaches itself to the bottom of the main WinCounter screen. This special screen has a button that allows you to test WinCounter.
  2. If you have a mouse connected to a serial port, consider installing a PS2 or USB mouse to free up a serial port.
  3. If you have a modem using an external serial port, consider installing an internal modem that can be configured to run on an additional serial port.
  4. Consider purchasing an add-on serial port card. These are relatively inexpensive and they generally give you an additional two serial ports.
  5. Some USB to serial port adaptors will work with WinCounter. Email to check if your adaptor will work.

Can I connect my own sensor or switch to WinCounter?

Yes, provided your sensor is wired correctly. Remember we don't offer support for special configurations. It is important to ensure that your sensor or switch is wired correctly or you may damage your computer. Software Studio Ltd. takes no responsibility for any damage caused by connecting devices to your computer system. Wiring diagrams can be found here.

Can your counting devices tell the difference between a person entering or leaving?

The basic sensors we provide can't tell the difference. WinCounter can be connected to almost any hardware counting device that has switch contacts so it is possible to use specialised sensors that are directional.

WinCounter reports have an option to divide the count by 2 assuming that everyone coming in has to go out!

We are testing an update to the software that uses two standard sensors to differentiate between people entering or leaving. This feature has not been released yet. Send email to if you are interested in this feature.
